They are spending more time and effort focusing on the needs of their best customers so as to develop better relationships. Customers are chosen if they are part of the company's elite programs. Sony Electronics is launching a new program called Cierge that provides free personal shoppers, early access to new gadgets, and help with home installations. British Airways is also launching a new program called "At Your Service," it tracks down hard to get destination tickets and even does errands around town for the customers. An upscale gym in New York called Clay will help members do everything from book Broadway tickets to sending Mother's Day Bouquets.

For the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, Amtrak issued 101,798 certificates valued at $8.9 million. That means, on average, 0.4 percent of riders received an average of $88 each in free train rides. Amtrak is ending the program because "the vast majority of certificates (were issued) due to circumstances beyond our control, like freight delays and weather." The greatest number of complaints, 45 percent, were about trains being late.

Estee Lauder, not wanting to jeopardize its upscale name or its relationship with high-end department stores, is creating a new company division called BeautyBank to develop products and brands exclusively for Kohl's.
7 7372 2004 Microsoft has a renewed focus on making its products more secure from viruses, hackers and other computer problems. Microsoft next month will release a set of enhancements called "Service Pack 2" that it says will make Windows more secure.
